The album marks the coming together of two very different generations of dub. Perry is unarguably one of the style's chief innovators, with a famous mixing board technique that helped lay the groundwork for dub and reggae throughout the '60s and '70s. Though they arrived about three decades later, The Orb, AKA Dr Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann, are innovators in their own right as well, having brought dub into the electronic realm with now classic tracks like "Little Fluffy Clouds" and "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld."
Though Paterson had DJ'd with Perry in the past, the three artists had never officially collaborated before THE ORBSERVER... sessions, which took place earlier this year in Berlin. "I met Lee for the first time during this session and it was pretty touching to see how an unexpected connection and inspirational exchange could so awaken our creative juices," says Fehlmann. "Alex and I had never made so much new music on the spot before... [Perry] was constantly active, referring to the tunes we were working on and hitting bits of wood or stone to create percussion patterns, so we ended up using field recordings of him banging on bits and pieces."
