This is an all-instrumental LP, recorded in 1977 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by a group that includes famed keyboardist and composer Hailu Mergia as well as vibes player Mulatu Astatke (who was a guest on this record). Funky and soulful yet drawn from Ethoipian scales and traditional tunes, this record is quite catchy.rnrnIt’s a super-rare record that goes for $4000 on ebay nowadays, and it was distinctive at the time for being a full-length of instrumentals. The Walias band were the long-running house band at the Hilton in Addis but these veterans of the nightclub scene were well-known by the public throughout the 1970s.
