The first three COTTAM release came thick & fast, and left quite an impression all three made Phonicas Best Of 2009 chart and sold out so quickly and became so in demand a re-press was essential. Since then Cottam has been DJing around the world, with trips to Berlin, Florence, Stokholm & Blackpool, along with a memorable early morning back to back set with The Revenge at the Warm Birthday in London. All this success has meant you won’t have heard much music from him recently – a track on Wolf music and a four tracker on Story may also have had something to do with him, but now the time is right for some new COTTAM music. Volume 4 has finally arrived with two new club tracks that are a progression from the first three EPs. The A side started life as another in the ‘afro-edit’ series of tracks that helped make his name, but the removal of the main vocal has seen the track grow into a techier beast that mixes an afro guitar with a late night dancefloor groove in the vein of Carl Craig’s finest remixes. A rough drum attack and a gradually building siren effect build into a crescendo and by the time the vocal drops you’re locked deep in the groove and by the second breakdown you know only one man can be responsible. The flipside sees a lost soul killer from Plantlife given the COTTAM treatment, ‘Luv 4 The World’ uses a L.T.D. disco break, a slither of Jack Splash’s vocal, a dirty kick drum and some electronic bass to devastating effect – this one will have ‘em climbing the walls! This is the opening salvo in the second barrage of COTTAM releases – expect tracks on Deep Space Orchestra’s new label ‘Use Of Weapons’, Quintessentials and remixes for Azari & III and more over the coming months.
