Beneath is that most rare of entities within the underground concentric circles: an artist with his own, unmistakable sound. Dark, rolling and percussive, over two previous underground vinyl-only releases this year on No Symbols he reverently references the edgy experiments of 2003-2005 dubstep pioneers Youngsta and Hatcha while building on the rolling beat foundations of more recent underground house and UK funky. Keysound Recordings are delighted to welcome him into the family with their first doublepack vinyl release. It features five original productions (‘Prangin’, ‘Wonz’, ‘Blonde’, ‘Illusion’ and ‘Tribulation) that build on the stripped back, ruff but rolling template but raise the bar he previously set. ‘Prangin’ is perhaps the highlight, a vocal incanting “this music is from the heart / it’s a genetic transmission”. Concluding the release is his deadly 350 remix of Balistiq Beats’ ‘Yardman’ featuring the dread vocals of former Roll Deep MC, Jamakabi. His dubs and 12”s have found home in the sets of Dusk + Blackdown, Marcus Nasty, Pinch, Brackles and Mosca. So early into his music career he’s already recorded exclusive mixes for Fact Magazine, Rinse FM and Blackdown’s blog. Fairly little is known about the elusive Beneath, apart from his northern England location and his urge to “make something that you could listen to and immediately know it was from the UK”. He cites Source Direct, Digital Myztikz, Kode9, D1, Ricardo Villalobos, Hatcha, Youngsta, and Marcus Nasty as influences. “They built their own thing, they told the producers what they wanted and they took it somewhere”. So has Beneath.
