Baths or Will Weisenfeld was the guy who made the stunningly placid and beautiful single ‘Rain Smell’ last year, after getting bigged up by Daedelus all over LA, playing with Flying Lotus and Nosa at a handful of Destroy LA shows. His debut album Cerulean (Anticon) stood out as one of the… standout LPs of 2010 when everyone and their Pokemon were making fuzzed out beats along the West Coast. Probably because the guy is super hyper and fun and talks fast like he hasn’t slept in 48 hours. Plus he rocks lambchop sideburns big enough to make Ted Danson cry.
First of all I ask what he means when he said that Cerulean was ‘very much a 1st album mentality album’. It was joyous and lovely. Is that what he means? “I wanted to make something immediate and accessible – not stupid, but…easier to digest. Upon first listen you can taste that positivity. You know, greased with happiness. But with layers of seediness and intensity? The next album is more akin to the music I made before Cerulean [presumably with his math-rock band Post Foetus]. Cerulean was a departure for me because I didn’t think about any of the songs before I started them. I was meant to be total spontaneity.”
