Hot limited reissue of this super-cool 1979 12" from some of the first female rappers ever to record on wax - Xanadu and Sweet Lady. Masterminded by heavyweight Jamaican producer Joe Gibbs and released on his own label, these quirky covers of the of massive Sugarhill Gang hit 'Rappers Delight' brought a distinct island flavour to the hip-hop sound emerging at that time from New York. Side A sticks close to the up-tempo disco-friendly original with musical backing given just a light dash of Caribbean lilt by Gibbs, while the girls add their own swagger to the original lyrics. But the flipside's 'Rockers Choice' is where Gibbs and the girls really let loose with some off-the-wall rap craziness (anyone fancy going to a club with roaches in the food and flies on your milkshake...) spat over a great bouncing reggae groove. The phenomenal instrumental delves deeper into dubbed-out reggae territory providing a dark and heavy syncopated take on those unmistakeable Chic riffs - an inspired rework that crossed the Atlantic to become a firm favourite with Baldelli on Italy's Cosmic scene as well as in NY and Jamaica. Four more-than-worthy versions of the all-time classic on one great if slightly eccentric 12" - essential!
