Far too few labels these days are releasing decent electronic music. Acre Records from Edinburgh, Scotland set out to regress the balance.
First up, we have Cane expertly wielding laser scalpels on their alter-ego - Funckarma’s (Djak-Up-Bitch, Ad Noiseam) - track, ‘Amp’. After a haunting intro we plunge into compulsive, acidic, techy rhythms. Highly edited, yet machine-funky, this jackin’ robot will turn heads on all dancefloors, shooting lasers from its purple eyeballs while body-popping.
This is followed by quite a departure from electro don Ben Milstein (a.k.a. Doctor Evil). After releases on Touchin’ Bass and Pyramid Transmissions, he comes up with a gorgeous and warped slice of late-night future jazz-funk. Guitars, basslines and robotic synths swirl around the funky bass and Squarepusher-esque breaks, finishing in a deliciously pulled-apart deconstruction. Warp, eat your heart out!
On side two we open with Phausis a.k.a. Rebel Intelligence member Agent2, gently massaging us with a beautifully deep sub bass underpinning IDM rhythms, mellifluous sounds and diaphanous atmospherics, before building to a beautiful crescendo (bringing to mind Tri Repetae) that makes us wish we could remember more of those 1990s after-party sessions…
The final track is an enormous concrete slab of bass to frighten children with. In a departure from his usual style, C. Mantle (Spacebar Sentiments, Handsette) loosens our bowels with his eminently danceable yet fearsome take on dubstep. Reggae sounds float over glitchy electronics, technical drum patterns and - dare we say it? – melody. This is some back-breaking weight destined to fire-up any dancefloor!
