* Now approaching its fifth year of groundbreaking releases, Med School excitedly present 2012’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed New Blood series. Bringing together a collection of artists suited to the Med School sound from the as-yet unknown to the underground hero, each track brings another interesting layer to the album.
*With no less than eight tracks split across two 12” vinyl, this is jam packed with the finest beats and basslines.
* Kicking things off with some dancefloor-destroying sub bass pressure, Lung, Joe Syntax & Eleven8 each bring their own brand of heavy to “Red Rhythm” which is dark and moody with a touch of the dancehall, and leads neatly in to Anile & Dakosa’s ‘Ecstasy Dub’ where dub influences have been carefully woven into clean, crisp waves of synths.
* Synth-heavy offering ‘Feels Like’ comes from the hands of Mutated Forms and breaks into a satisfying stomp, looping an infectious vocal and hinting at trance-like vamps. Next up, Blu Mar Ten bring the atmospheric sounds of empty streets and night skies with ‘Last Life in the Universe’. Mysterious and ambient without neglecting that characteristically warm bassline, it’s a delve into the darker side of Blu Mar Ten that isn’t often explored.
*Australian producer Royalston has been a Med School trooper for years now. Expect on-point production, nightmarish bass and paranoid sampling scattered liberally over the top in “Carnivore”. Then it’s over to Submerse; having produced cut after cut of future-garage at its finest, Submerse takes Med School to task with ‘Always, Like This’, a stunning example of atmospheric 2-step flourishing in the heart of a primarily drum and bass focussed release.
*S.I.N is a newcomer to Med School, but he’s by no means new to the craft. ‘Neverending’ is an exercise in throbbing subs and delicate ambiance with subtle piano embellishments and an eerie vocal sample all make for an intriguing listen. TwoThirds and BadApple then bring gentle, melodious D+B to the fore in ‘Sense of Being’. With clear, cut-glass vocals from Veela, and a strong driving bass, this hugely optimistic track is worlds apart from the current influx of dark, evil basslines and for that it’s intensely refreshing.
*A transfusion of Med School versatility, with releases reaching outside the limits of D+B and into 2-step and dubstep. ‘Blood Pressure’ follows up ‘New Blood 011’ and takes it to a whole new level!
