Downwards sidestep expectations again with this glorious release from Tropic of Cancer. Two beautifully dark compositions that remind slightly of Angelo Badalamenti in 'Twin Peaks' mode, or maybe Reservoir Dogs, if it had been filmed with a huge cavern as the soundstage. Processed guitar and drones wash swampily over a simple drumbox beat, as eerie snatches of melody float in and out. As Badalamenti himself said of his own work, "My (musical) world is a little bit dark... a little bit off-center. I think of it as tragically beautiful. That is how I would describe what I love best: tragically beautiful." Seems to sum this release up quite nicely too...
