This story begins when Paul Murphy was playing his usual mix of funky old jazz one night in a club in Budapest. In walked sax man Brandon Mezzelo. “Does anyone make this stuff anymore?” he asked. “Yeah for sure” Paul said. “We do!” Thanks to Vinylize Records, the music division of the super cool sunglasses guys at Tipton Eyewear they got the go ahead to record this little slab of vinyl. Paul called the tune “Moanin'”. The Jazz Messengers. “I wanna make like Eddie Harris on this” said Brandon. “Go for it.” On the team we have on the B3 the Number One and Only Mr. Matt Hammond. You may know him from his band The Qualitons. They set the world on fire not too long ago. Still doing it too. “Only one guy for drums I want” Matt said. Mark Badics. Had to prize him away from listening to his Al Jackson tapes. Tom Zador is the guitar star. He's making like Steve Cropper in the rhythm department then blazing away like George Benson on his solo's. Adding some of that “Latino” spice in the stew is Antal Olah. “The Man” on the Timbales. “But where we gonna cut it?” asked the guys. “I know where we can do it.” Paul replied. The best studio in town. The one man who knows The Sound. Puha. The Professor. One take. Only one overdub and that's Brandon doing his Eddie Harris take. The Professor insisted on mastering on his Reel To Reel tape machine. He said “It's kind of old fashioned but I think you'll like the sound.” “Go for it Prof.” “We're gonna put this out on something equally old fashioned”. And here you are. A seven inch single.
