The first, and probably the greatest of all girl groups, the Chantels broke into recording in the late 50's, behind their lead singer Arlene Smith.
They were, in fact, so early that the original version of this album, featuring a picture of the group on the cover, was soon withdrawn and repackaged with a picture of two white teenagers picking out a song from a jukebox.
Originally released on the END record label in 1957, the Chantels' debut consists of little more than both sides of their first six singles for the label, resulting in almost a greatest-hits package.
Reissued here in its original (and highly hard to find!) "plantation girls" cover, this is probably the most seminal and influential record in the "all-female" chapter of rock and roll history.
