We want to tell you a story about Chicago. What better storytellers could we have chosen than Chicago's legendary disco maestro, Rahaan and our own breakthrough house visionary, The Black Madonna?
This record is the story of one night in the world's house music capital. The EP was born when The Black Madonna happened upon a video of Rahaan DJing at an underground event. This clip was a rare window to the kind of raw, electric party you can hardly believe even exists in this day and age. A one room sweatbox with unfinished construction and exposed beams. Bodies everywhere. There are no VIPs. This is Chicago - of the Warehouse, the Muzic Box, Medusas. This is Chicago - of Larry, Ron and Armando. This is the Chicago that you might have dreamt of, but never got to experience firsthand.
Suddenly you see Rahaan cut the record, but the music doesn't stop. The crowd picks up where Rahaan leaves off. "Toot toot! Hey! Beep beep! We don't need no music!" They continue in the round, gaining energy. Hands clapping, feet pounding into the ground. The room has become the record in a perfect expression of everything that is good and right about our city, Chicago. And then, with the precision of a surgeon, Rahaan drops the record back in on time with the crowd. The result is spectacular, devastating and unforgettable. Wanting to capture that experience, The Black Madonna sampled Rahaan's crowd, spinning that unforgettable moment into an homage to her hero. The result is an instant classic, "We Don't Need No Music (Thank You, Rahaan)." Regal horns and swinging disco percussion are the signature sounds in this timeless snapshot of house music's queen city.
If it can be said that The Black Madonna's contribution to this record is the way she imagined that night, it should also be said that Rahaan's contribution is the way he remembered it. With his side, Rahaan brings an ecstatic revision of the record that was on the platter in the video. The master truly shows his skill here with this looping, thunderous disco workout. Both sides of this limited edition, hand-stamped future classic would easily find their way in the crates of any house or disco lover.
