The third release from One Records, comes from one half of the backbone to the project, Subb-an, one the UK’s finest young talents who delivers an anthemic package with ‘Soul Skool’.
‘Soul Skool’ is unapologetically gripping, opening with moody atmospheric keys before settling into an iconic bassline, and teasing with the vintage sounds of early house vocals and rasping brass instruments. This is the distinctly vivacious sound of Subb-an, matched with an equally alluring Shaun Reeves remix.
“I'm into a lot of old funk & soul records that swing and groove, so you get that feeling with the vocal,” says Ash AKA Subb-an. ‘Soul Skool’ is indeed infused with plenty of groove, yet also speaks with a powerful, brooding heart. Detroit nu-breed talent Shaun Reeves shakes up the original with a deep and lightly flavoured rework, in keeping with his strong output on Wolf + Lamb and Simple. Two tools complete the package, a fixture on each One Records release, giving functionality to the dancefloor.
Subb-an was recently named as an artist to watch by Mixmag. His youthful and passionate outlook has led him to release productions and remixes on some of the finest labels on the underground circuit, such as B-Pitch, Hypercolour, 2020vision, Leftroom and Mothership. Together with his partner, Adam Shelton, One Records was launched at the end of 2009, cultivated directly from five years experience at the helm of Below, one of the UK’s most upfront and authentic underground parties, the label aims to encapsulate the energy and dexterity of artists and crowds the night has connected with most.
