There’s something in the water in instrumental grime right now, with a new wave of producers twisting the genre’s trademarks into amazing new shapes. At the forefront of all this is Slackk, whose radio slots on NTS and Rinse FM and monthly Soundcloud mixes have become the place to keep up on new grime. Slackk’s always been on this wave, of course – he was DJing grime and running the essential Grimetapes website before he even had a record out – but recent years have seen him emerge as one of the genre’s most exciting producers, with releases on Local Action, Numbers and Unknown to the Unknown. Failed Gods is the best record that he’s made yet, packing everything from ninjaman club destroyers to beatless synth pieces, with a healthy dose of weed and Twin Peaks in the mix. Honestly the most inventive grime record released in years – don’t sleep.
