Sales Notes:
For Well Rounded’s 11th release Bristol’s Skinnz drops a trio of infectious and melodic creations that share a kinship with today’s garage and funky house sounds whilst standing apart due to their unique character.
You may know Sam from his other alias Baobinga. He is man who commands much respect for his collaborations with people from a wide variety of musical backgrounds and his ability to channel his influences in an unforced and colourful way.
On the Skinnz releases so far he has experimented with more garage influenced beats, while retaining his trademark focus on percussive momentum. However these tracks often flow freely across boundaries and genre limits encouraged to evolve in any direction that creates excitement.
Previous Skinnz releases have already appeared on Pinch’s Earwax label and Boka Records whilst his debut outing was on one of the first compilations of music that might be termed dubstep – the classic ‘Our Sound’ album on Destructive.
First up on the A is ‘Put It on’. A favourite with the label this a tight and highly focused percussive battery making fantastic use of woodblocks, shakers, tuned bells and hand percussion sounds. A bold synth and tropical marimba share melodic honours supported by supple subs and rising synth strings. There is undoubtedly a sunny tropical vibe here – bringing to mind hyper-colourful carnivals and sand-kicking beach parties as well as dark night-club dancefloors.
1st track on the AA is ‘I Know’. This has had a big response from numerous djs from different scenes. Darker in tone with a mysterious atmosphere and spacious arrangement this is driven by a slamming stop start rhythm which cuts through crisp and clear in the mix and will work the dancefloor rigorously with it’s unusual momentum.
2nd up on the flip is ‘Get It On’. Favourite with some synth-lovers for being the most musically detailed of the 3 tunes, this is built upon cosmic arpeggiations and crowned with a thoroughly infectious vocal hook. This tune radiates warmth and joy.
In summary, Skinnz’s ep aims to make you shake your hips with a smile on your lips, and in troubled times we can’t resist the relief this brings.
