Rockwell steps up for his first Shogun release since signing exclusively with the label and shows just what hot property he is with 'DJ Friendly Unit Shifter' b/w 'Fakin' Jacks'.
Oozing versatility, Rockwell consistently achieves a fine balance between dance floor tear-out and the production intricacies that have gained his music so much attention - this release is no exception, serious business.
As featured on Friction's recent Ministry Of Sound mix album, 'DJ Friendly Unit Shifter' is a beast, intro'ing with distorted synth teases that drop suddenly into a deep pulsing sub-bass, warming the blood as it chases cheeky rhythmic glitches. A funk-induced warping bass hits against the velvety-smooth, while underlying shakes and edits highlight the constant motion in the music - a fine characteristic of the new Shogun warrior. Then wait for the breakdown that gives some respite before things roll out again, big stinking nasty!
'Fakin' Jacks' reveals Rockwell's advanced and futuristic sound - a technical masterpiece. The side-chained synth intro delves into an impossibly deep, dark, devilish bass. Whiplash strikes and cool synth stabs drop over unforgiving hits and FX, accompanied by Rockwell's trademark heavily-edited drums and basslines that make for an astounding track. An impressive feat, and not a surprise to learn then, that 'Fakin' Jacks' features over 100 tracks of percussion and took over three months to write!
