End of March will see the release of a 12inch featuring one original Red Stars Over Tokyo track and a remix by the acclaimed Magazine collective from Cologne. End of April, a second 12inch will follow featuring remixes only, done by Machinefabriek and Vindicatrix. Later this year we will also release a Red Stars Over Tokyo full album. Since 2008, Red Stars Over Tokyo has been releasing records on his own Hot Hair imprint. With a past playing in Punk bands, his sound nowadays has a deliberate lo-fi approach. His tracks have a free-flowing feel, sounding improvised without shunning precision and emotional poise. 'Crossing a Frozen Sea' is a 20-minute long Ambient track that seems toreference the alienation of the Residents' Eskimo album, but quickly turns into an almost driving and kind of staccato elegy, frozen in time between a definite 90's Intelligent Ambient influence and an understated referenceto 80's Industrial music. 'Threads', the 1984 BBC documentary-like account of a nuclear war, seen from the perspective of the city of Sheffield, was a definite influence on Red Stars Over Tokyo while producing this track. Its sense of the world ending and a forced acceptance of what has just happened define 'Crossing a Frozen Sea' and give an eeriness to its undeniable beauty. The Magazine remix gives 'Crossing a Frozen Sea' a bit more of a forward momentum. The 90's Intelligent Ambient and Techno influence remains firmly in place, but a liquid bassline and some melodic syncopation give the remix its undeniable Magazine touch. Since starting the Magazine project in 2010, its three members have earned a reputation of bringing a different and more experimental approach to club music. Their remix of 'Crossing a Frozen Sea' adds to the high level of their productions. Accessible, but not easy, this is mobile and emotive music for many different contexts.
