A1. Blueberry Lemon
B1. How You Know
B2. Brighten My Day (featuring Naomi Jeremy)
Outboxxhail from Bristol and like much of the great city's output their music has plenty of laidback style and vibe.
Jacob Hodge builds the sharp beats, adds bass depth and controls the technology, Matt Lambert adds the authentic keys - rhodes and synth licks with beautifully judged hints of jazz, soul and vintage funk. And on final track 'Brighten My Day' Miss Naomi Jeremy adds a wonderfully unaffected and warm vocal performance that has us under it's spell.
Track One 'Blueberry Lemon' struts along a sun-drenched sidewalk with a swagger in it's step. The trade-off between the chiseled rhythms & the fluid feeling of the keys creates an instant feel good groove with just the right amount of push and pull to keep the floor swinging. The breakdown comes on with sunset synths with twinkling twilight textures on piano before we're propelled into a 2nd half with enhanced bounce.
Track Two 'How You Know' digs a little deeper but no less effectively. Slinking this time perhaps. The unhurried arrangement leaves plenty of space for each element to exert maximum presence. The beautifully restrained drop builds towards a second section with added bump and hustle as the live piano vamps with real feel and panache.
Finally, Track Three 'Brighten My Day' takes the pace down further and opens up room for the charming and disarming voice of Naomi Jeremy. This composition has a certain soothing quality that brings the ep to a satisfying conclusion. A feeling of familiarity, an unpretentious soulfulness. This also features some discreet synth phrases that work around the vocals in a classic musical dialogue.
Beautifully balanced and expertly executed - put simply, we LOVE this EP.
