Two freshly brewed killer tracks by one of the most exciting emerging outfits of the contemporary scene. Gritty funk grooves on side A, and a smooth soul-jazz number on side B.
6-piece funk & soul band The Pimptones are the brainchild of jazz guitarist Nick Pride, who formed this Newcastle-based group in 2007. With a penchant for funky grooves and beefy breaks, Nick Pride & The Pimptones bring the horns to the front and turn up the heat! Their slick arrangements have all the harmonic sophistication that the Jazz Cats love, delivered with a heavyweight punch that keeps the dancefloor moving. Funk fans in the UK were quick to pick up on the band’s self-financed debut album, and by 2009 the group was regularly playing some of the country’s best funk venues.
When DJ/Producer extraordinaire Smoove released Pimptones single “Deeper Pimp” on his Wack Records, the cut went on to enjoy extended radioplay across Europe and was championed by Craig Charles (Funk&Soul Show on BBC6) and Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz) among others. Skip to 2011 and Record Kicks is pleased to welcome the band on board and present two new tracks on 45/Digital, in anticipation of a new full-length. Side A’s ”Waitin’ So Long feat. Jess Roberts” is a gritty deep funk & soul nugget complete with big horns and a badass female soul vocal, whereas “Lay it On The Line feat. Zoe Gilby” features a finely crafted melody with a smooth soul-jazz groove. A tasty 45 sure to pave the way for Nick Pride & The Pimptones to go global, so watch this group!
