After the striking debut release on Nothing Odd Recordings found label owner Sam Smith sitting comfortably alongside Baby Ford for an exploration of subliminal house and techno, NOR002 finds Smith donning the alias Monty The Fly and expanding on his own vision for stripped-down dance music brimming with psychoactive tendencies. Across the three tracks there is a diverse range of moods being drawn on, from the meditative to the mechanical, all fused together by what some might consider an obsessive eye for detail. There's meditation in the air in places, with mysterious pads and heavy splashes of reverb soaking out into some corners in the time-honoured dubwise spirit of transcendental electronic music. Elsewhere brushed percussion and disembodied vocals shape out a more sinister message, lending themselves to a sound world both immersive and disorientating in one fell swoop.
