It's been a breakthrough past year for the family known as Cómeme - the collective / record label / radio station helmed by Matias Aguayo and Avril Ceballos. With a firm foundation of emerging artists from around the world propelling the label forward, Cómeme knows no musical boundaries and fits no specific genre but their releases have found their ways into a full spectrum of DJ's crates ranging from techno tastemakers Michael Mayer, Tim Sweeney and Optimo to Erol Alkan and Boys Noize. To those of you unfamiliar with Matias Aguayo, he remains a core Kompakt recording artist and one of today's most ambitious music makers and collaborators. Be it from his early days as half of the now legendary techno act Closer Musik, to singing for Battles on their recent hit "Ice Cream", Aguayo makes Cómeme his platform to work with fellow musicians from around the world and continues to push all notions away if what dictates trend and create his own. "As a traveling musician, and throughout my whole life, I have been a visitor..." Matias returns with his 3rd solo full length "The Visitor" - recorded over the course of 5 years in various places around the world including Buenos Aires, Ciudad de México, Vitry-Sur- Seine, Rionegro (Antioquia, Colombia), Sternhagen Gut, and his studio - The District Union in Berlin. As with his previous albums, Matias Aguayo unveils a perplexing and unexpected offering. Rather than appealing to a specific genre, he considers rhythm as a core influence in "The Visitor" and delivers what could be his most purposeful music to date. "Music is about dialog and communicating on other levels, that's why it is more fun and more challenging to involve people in the process, and learn from one another" A collaborative process plays a dominant role in "The Visitor", articulating Matias Aguayo's attentiveness to the community that surrounds him. Mixed and co-produced by Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat upon first hearing "The Visitor", long time fans of his music will be immediately aware how the songs sound natural and immense. The secret is not just in the mix but due to the fact are numerous musicians and vocalists performing on each track. By utilising so many layers of analogue and acoustic instrumentation, "The Visitor" as a whole provokes a distinct listening experience that contrasts the ease of digital processing techniques and styles of most modern dance music out there today. Recorded in Buenos Aires, Ciudad de México, Vitry-Sur-Seine, Rionegro (Antioquia, Colombia), Sternhagen Gut, and finally assembled and mixed in Matias Aguayo's Berlin studio - The District Union, "The Visitor" is his cultural manifest of sorts that shares his travels and experiences over the past few years. . Matias Aguayo's passion for the various local musical dialects of these regions resounds in each track individually. Album opener "RRRRR" launches things off like a technicolored, smoke fuelled rocket - bass collides with a frenzy of vocals that include famed Argentinean singer Juliana Gattas (Miranda!) and Aérea Negrot (Hercules & Love Affair, Bpitch Control). Matias Aguayo spent the month of January 2013 in the mountains of Colombia recording with a group of young musicians who combine modern dance music with the vitality and complexities of native Cumbia rhythms. These sessions come to life on "The Visitor" where percussionist Luis Miguel »Cucharita« Jaramillo brings not only the musical style of the region to these songs but a warmth and humanity to the essence of the recordings. Russian born and bred Philipp Gorbachev is a vital member of the Cómeme family - now residing in Berlin he's riding a wave of success thanks to his brand of body music that unique recalls New York's No- Wave movement. As well being a percussionist, he joins Matias Aguayo on "By The Graveyard", "Dear Inspector" and "Do You Want To Work?" - their blending remarks some of the most unusually addictive songs you will hear on "The Visitor". Other members of the Cómeme family are ever present with Alejandro Paz (who will be performing with Matias Aguayo this summer) harmonising together with Aguayo's voice on the modern world ballad "Aonde" and as a member of the raging choir (alongside Ana Helder, Julia Bande, Julia Kasprzak,, Amelia Bande, Rodrigo Olavarría) that make up the anthem of tomorrow "Las Cruces". Last but not at all least, Daniel Maloso - Mexico's ambassador of dark disco - can be heard on "Levantate Diegors", "El Camaron" and "Do You Want To Work". "The lyrics on this album are very important to me and how they were made. I took the following approach to "The Visitor" : by trusting the subconscious, I improvised most of the lyrics while singing, starting therefore from using my voice in a very musical context and less lyrical. Later I would try to decipher the lyrics I had improvised...in a miraculous way they always would make sense and represent the intention of what I wanted in the song..." Fans of Matias Aguayo know that his voice has ever played an important role as an instrument rather than a message - his previous album "Ay Ay Ay" demonstrates his signature style perfectly. Beyond a born Chilean/German, Spanish has been Matias Aguayo's first language for a number of recent years. Given that the album has a distinct Latin American foundation, the obvious choice for this album of course is Spanish (though songs like "Dear Inspector", "A Certain Spirit" and "By The Graveyard" are sung in English). For the non-Spanish speaker the ease of how his singing flows as an instrument along with the songs on "The Visitor" easily squashes any issue with getting lost in translation and Spanish fans will be sure to sing along with the humour and playfulness of his lyrics. To top this off, Matias Aguayo had the privilege to write together with legendary Chilean vocalist Jorge González (Los Prisioneros) on "Las Cruces" and "Una Fiesta Diferente" and he wrote the lyrics to "Aonde". So there you have it - Matias Aguayo has arrived with what could be his most profound and inspiring work yet. "The Visitor" is not easy to categorise or caption - and that's the beauty of what makes it so special to the ears.
