A certain Detroit dweller with the initials KW returns to boe with a magnificently original and varied EP, featuring his own signature sound yet still managing to touch upon multiple genres. Thunderous kick drums and a chi-town swing fill the whole EP and balance off KW’s haunting melodies and raw techno arrangements.
Undergrowth is a relentless techno track evolving from humble beginnings with a simple chord pattern and heavy -set sampled kick. It leans towards a modern take on all things crossover and should find favour with jocks pushing the dub techno and UK sound. The track picks up steam after a teasing intro and just a subtle change of pitch in the chord progression claws listeners into the next phase of the rollercoaster journey with subwoofer-punishing bass. KW adds singing lead pads and hi hats into the mix with each pass of the progressions, eventually peaking around the 5 minute mark leaving listeners wondering how the hell they got where they are on the dance floor.
Project 3 is a cut that boe once thought to be lost through an unfortunate loss of computer hardware in London 2009. 2011 is here and Project 3 is back from the ashes, complete with a low riding groove and delightful grain delayed pads that turn the mood to a spacey affair from its funk fuelled beginnings.
On the flip, Detroit to London proves KW’s range as a producer, showcasing his ability to combine sample heavy grooves with surprising melodies altogether creating something off the wall and avant-garde. Normally a cliché in house music, KW uses clever saxophone and woodwind samples that bounce along to a DJ Sneak style rhythm and chord loop, ensuring that the house stylings are kept intact.
Finally rounding off the EP with aplomb is Needs, a stripped down houser covering all deep bases with its warm bassline and delicate chord stabs. Its structure has a melancholy of classic Matthew Herbert with sampled percussion and chopped up vocal snippets.
Overall the EP is something for everybody and everything for many. KW is back with a vengeance for 2011 with possibly his best EP yet.
