Ultrastretch has returned for its second 12inch of 2014, and its two tangled, tripping sides come from Markos Spanoudakis, AKA Kreon. A Greek producer with a degree in electrical engineering and an early musical education in the form of his father’s epic record collection, Kreon knows his way around mindbending, late-night grooves. He’s charmed on labels like Robsoul, Cécille Numbers and Robsoul Red—not to mention on dance floors across Europe with twisting-and-turning DJ sets—but it’s been a minute since he treated us to something new from his studio. (Chalk it up to pursuing a Master’s in Electronic Music Composition and Sound Design, which he recently wrapped in London.) Globerip / Tungor is his first solo release since 2011, and it marks his Ultrastretch debut.
Given Spanoudakis’s predilection for tunes at once nervy, groovy and psychedelic, his team-up with Sammy Dee’s imprint is a long time coming. The results don’t disappoint. “Globerip” is ever-so-slightly steppin’, with rhythms plucked from electro and sound design in the lineage of the finest minimal house. We don’t want to ruin the surprise, but as its beat and vocals uncoil, a flourish of unexpected warmth rushes out like a summer breeze. “Tungor” is all beats—intricately woven and surprisingly musical, but stomping enough to carry dancers on until morning. At that hour, we expect both sides will feel right at home.
