Jay Haze and Ricardo Villalobos, two producers at the top of their game, unite once again for an EP of three dubbed-out percussion and horn-driven tracks. Ricardo and Jay first met in person in NYC in 1999 when Jay come to see Ricardo DJ. Jay’s TuningSpork shirt caught Ricardo’s attention and the two have been comrades since, sharing a studio when they established themselves in Berlin. Since then, they have released a pair of EPs together, Jay has remixed Ricardo’s “Easy Lee", and Ricardo guested on Jay’s latest album Love & Beyond. Now they unite again for an EP of three new productions. “Mellow Dee” is marked by an onslaught of pounding snare drums, contrasted by the addition of cinematic horns and strings. It’s mellow and urgent at the same time, “Sunday Prayer” has more of a latino sci-fi flair. These two tracks showcase the perfect combo of Jay’s dub expertise and musicality with Ricardo’s unmatched sense of percussion, and they further the Contexterrior label’s modus operandi: unapologetic experimentalism combined with dancefloor practicality.
