PASADENA, CA 1980: What an amazing tune! This was first brought to our attention via top dj’s on the UK’s modern soul scene. Halo is the product of three very talented young lads who met in Pasadena during the late 70’s. Karvin Lee Johnson, James King Jr., & Greg Coleman started the group after realizing they had what it took to make it in the industry at that time.
Greg & James had moved out to California from Detroit, following the moves of Berry Gordy and Motown, it was in Pasadena where they pooled together with local talent Karvin L. Johnson. The “Let Me Do It session was produced by “Welcome Back Cotter & “Cooley High actor Laurence Hilton Jacobs at a studio located on the corner of Sunset & Vine. This brilliant session also featured the stalwart session drummer James Gadson (Dyke and the Blazers, Charles Wright) lending the tune its ROCK solid beat.
The group Halo went on to make one more record, this time without Karvin, under the name of King Cole on Halo records. Karvin Lee Johnson went on to record for M&M records in Chicago, releasing an LP under the name of Gemini, which has become collectible in it’s own right.
