The “Environmental Radiation Dose on the Moon” EP is the first collaboration between Zooloft and Aconito records. The two labels are twinned in exploring the limits of techno, experimenting with structures and sequences and ultimately arriving at the place where the deep and dark sublimes.
The EP opens with “The Child That Was Watching The Moon” a track lifted right out of the drone-techno hymnal. It starts with muddied, subterranean bass and builds not just outwards but inwards. Filled with obtuse references and metallic rasps the atmosphere created is obscure and spectral. On the reverse “The Moon That Was Watching The Child” sounds like it’s been exposed to radiation. The sounds are distorted, as if created from samples of the genome unzipping. The arrangement is stunning, bells filter in and out and the layers smelt into one another. There is awe at work here, but it’s an awe that remains underpinned by terror. This release, mastered in Berlin at the legendary Calyx studio, is something of a record collector’s dream. It will be released on solid silver vinyl in a very limited edition of just 200 copies. ZA000LTD should be enjoyed on wax, this won’t be available digitally.
