To naysayers, techno is a genre often derided as being soulless and unemotional. And in many respects, it often is. Fortunately however, such issues never seem to permeate through Funk D'Void's output. Taking a much deserved hiatus from the Francois Dubois pseudonym that's served him so well of late, the Scottish native returns to his own recently established Outpost imprint here with a two track EP, that - in many ways - is symbolic of the style he's become renowned for in recent years. With loose parallels to his biggest hit to date, "Diabla", A side "Pyramid" sees Mr.Sandberg return to languid planes once more, the end result a vintage inspired concoction of shrewdly placed Detroit-esque synths and tough bass kicks that just stops short of releasing an emphatic, heavily anticipated drop. An apt tool to build momentum, "Pyramid" is sure to act as a canny building block between the deeper and more peak time stage of the night's proceedings. The ying to "Pyramid"s yang is "Toro", an altogether darker affair characterised by its stirring bassline and mounds of percussive elements. Truly unique and heaving with more than a fair dollop of attitude to boot, it makes for a more upfront and indicative example of the producer's penchant for the more relentless and hypnotic. The undoubted highlight of the package, it's sure to act as a secret weapon to many a big name this summer. As his moniker may well suggest, Lars Sandberg's latest is certainly devoid of monotony, with emphatic moments of the type we've come to expect very much the order of the day here.
