To complete his 'Making Simple Things Complex' project, Data has produced an EP of sculpted, streamlined D&B that balances the cyber-creativity of techno with funky, more human elements. 'Sentinel' opens to ominous modal chords pricked through by spiky drums, joined first by a thrumming oldschool sub and then sizzling midrange snarl, while on 'Phalanx', Data fuses halfstep styles with hardcore DNA to produce a menacing B-boy monster. 'Solitude' maintains the tense vibe that permeates the entire project, with an evolving dive-bomb bassline that smothers glitching drums, and 'Isolation' winds up the EP with a dexterous mix of skittery percussion, choppy snares and serrated subs.
