For our 6th release Well Rounded is stoked to bring you a choice selection
of garage heat on the ‘Revival’ EP from the might C.R.S.T. This 4 man crew
are currently doing their native Wales proud with releases on No Hats, No
Hoods and Doc Daneeka’s 10,000 Yen as well as a weekly show on the mighty
Sub FM.
It’s the no-nonsense, peak-time dancefloor potential of these tunes that won
us over immediately. Although these tracks look back to the sound of
original classic garage, they have a fresh, vibrant and satisfying impact
today. Up first ‘Need You’ is no holds barred 4/4 Speed Garage with belted
diva vocal hits, winning digital saxophones and a groove that’ll get your
shoulders shuffling and face beaming. This should equally appeal to soulful
geezers and laydeez!
2nd tune ‘May Not Be Real’ is in similar mode but whilst the rhythm has
extra tuff skippyness the vulnerable vocals lend this a slightly more
wistful, yearning quality. Yeah, tough but tender.
Flip it over for ‘Dial The Operator’ and we have a different flava. Though
still a garage sound this time we are reminded of early Texture / Souljah
Records as a rude boy b-line rides chopped but rolling breaks. The dialling
tones and operator voices give this a hooky almost ‘Pocket Calculator’
appeal. It’s completely ace.
Finally ‘Walk On’ is a dusty dark mover coming on with a tight gloopyness,
disembodied voices, shards of synths and a moody almost ’05 Tempa vibe.
So there we have it, a well-timed ep that unearths roots to reveal their
influence on the Bass Music scene today - refreshing these vibes for a new
generation at a time when garage has renewed relevance. Some history lessons
are FUN!! And this music rocks it anytime.....
