The fifth installment form the Panacustica label is a collaboration between Cosmic Metal Mother and Sal Principato, the voice and percussionist behind seminal New York’s band Liquid Liquid. The A-side is the title track “Try” writer mix, an homage to the bands and era that forged Cosmic Metal Mother’s taste and influences over the years. By the first few grooves, you are submerged down in a subway tunnel, where a “writer” sprays out of a can Sal’s lyrics about soul searching, alienation and uncertainty until the record opens up into an intense, emotionally charged melodic line that carries throughout the score, blending in and out of an urban sound-scape, a heavy bass line, guitars, eerie synths and funk drums. Opening the B side we find “Try” die himmlische maschine mix. This could be the soundtrack to a seventies children animation film about celestial beings… a straight up cosmic, low-fi, electronic instrumental, where the vocal is replaced by a temperamental speak ‘n’ spell and the track is constructed by synths sequences a glockenspiel and cellos harmonizing an oddly sweet melody. The closing track is “Try” dub for Chicago, a production dedicated to the windy city. 909, piano chords, a deep bass line and a beautiful flute solo are the main ingredients of this hyper-melodic house track, that brings us back to 1986, where it all started. This is a tune for the late morning, afternoon dance floors, a tune to elevate minds and lift the spirit. Limited pressing, not to be missed.
