"Ecstasy / Discipline" is the third installment in the sonic journey of Cloud Canyons (Stella Baraldi, Michelle Cristofori, Laura Storchi, Nicola Caleffi), following their debut album "Dreaming Of Horses Running In Circles" (2023) and the "Under Neon Stars" split single with Studio Kosmische (2024). The single features two tracks focused on repetition and release. Musically combining live analogue synthesizers with looped electronics and interwoven vocals, the two 8 minute long companion pieces follow complementary paths: if "Ecstasy" is a loose, liquid odyssey, its wave-like texture supporting lyrics based on a counterclockwise medicine wheel, and ultimately reaching its climax in an embracing finale, "Discipline" is a relentless energy flash which, by joining layers of pulsating blasts and rhythm particles with tape delayed effects, climbs to its apex in a self-releasing catharsis. Yet, in a subtle way, each song also turns into its conceptual reverse. So "Ecstasy", instead of taking the listeners to some boundless ecstatic place, always keeps them gently on the track, while "Discipline" starts in a rigid structured grid which gradually evolves and leads to a rather undisciplined, liberating coda, both of them therefore showing the deep intricacy of these two apparently opposite realms - the discipline of ecstasy and the ecstasy of discipline. Another step in Cloud Canyons' ongoing creative process, "Ecstasy / Discipline" again finds the quartet in a challenging habit, stretched between minimalism and lushness, tension and relief.
