ICHLU is the second in a run of three EPs for the label This by Bert Verso, marking the first time his music has been committed to vinyl. Following swiftly in the footsteps of the dazzling opening edition Honeybees, Verso continues to shape his cross-functional and genre-fusional sound with 4 turntable-ready original works and a remix by Eden Burns.
The title track ICHLU rolls out proceedings with super tight pitched-down breaks and tastefully placed melodic jabs - restrained but with a softly burning intensity, in true Bert Verso fashion. Azure Pops melds together elements of B-more club & dub techno, with an orchestra of percussive shards giving it a prickly dancefloor energy. Seasoned Kiwi producer Eden Burns repackages this into a stripped back vintage house roller, its sonic palette conjuring distant Paradise Garage vibes.
On the B-side, Verso channels the more reflective elements of his sound into prime early doors/late night atmospherics. Daisy sets out on softly glowing pastures, with a melodic rhodes line slowly building into a shimmering arpeggio. The emotive elements of this track resonate strongest here, as the genesis of the track was formed whilst looking forward to the birth of his daughter, Alva. In Verso's own words:
"Whilst expecting, we called the bump Daisy and this became her birth-flower as she was born in April, so it carries a lot of meaning. This song is for her.”
The B2 Sugary Cove fittingly completes the package by combining the strengths of each side of the wax - searching melodies which fluidly move on top of weighty synthesized drums and warm low-end.
