Alice Russell will be releasing her latest album Pot of Gold on May 8th. It’s her fourth release to date, and it adds to a rich back catalogue that includes live recordings, studio albums and collaborations. She is in great demand as a vocalist and has gained an enviable reputation as one of the UK’s hottest singers, having recorded with the likes of Massive Attack and The Nextmen, as well as The Roots and The Quantic Soul Orchestra.
Alice’s first album, My Favorite Letters, was released on UK based indie label Tru Thoughts, and was met with critical and commercial acclaim. Recently, she has collaborated with Ninja Tune's Mr Scruff on Music Takes Me Up, a standout track from the latter’s new album. Alice also features on forthcoming releases by her old label mates Quantic Soul Orchestra and TM Juke. Alice is also taking the US by storm. Three transatlantic tours over the last twelve months, and a promo deal with Starbucks, have landed her a new stateside record deal and a fast growing North American fanbase.
Blessed with a lavishly soulful voice, Alice’s sound is modern, but firmly rooted in the past – surpassing the likes of Duffy and Adele’s impersonations of the soul greats, Alice’s records are extremely refreshing. Likewise, her live performances are truly unique, capable of captivating an audience and holding its attention throughout, expertly tugging at individual heartstrings. Her smouldering blues-inflected lament is constantly evolving in her solo material, thanks to collaborations with other producers (including Quantic, Nostalgia 77, Bah Samba and Kushti), which have encompassed everything from funk to soul, gospel to jazz, and to hip-hop and beyond.
Pot of Gold is a rare, bold and adventurous undertaking for Alice. Rare for a female artiste as this is the first release on her own Little Poppet label, which is licensed to Differ-ant in France, Benelux, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, and is supported by finance from Ingenious VCT and various other private investors. Clearly, artistic control is paramount for this performer, and it serves only to fill this Pot of Gold with deeper intrigue, wit and style. Alice’s sound has been distilled, encompassing live strings, horns and piano to compliment the intimate and uplifting shift in her new material.
Pot of Gold is released on November 17th. She will be on tour across the UK, US and Europe throughout the remainder of 2008 and into 2009.
