Underground house and techno veteran Francis Harris, aka Adultnapper, and LA
born and raised, Big Bully, are welcomed into the Culprit fold for the
label’s eighth release. Culprit delivers another unique first on these two
tracks with the pairing of Adultnapper and Big Bully, a collaboration that
unites two artists with extensive musical pedigrees. Adultnapper is hard to
pin down. He is at once a NYC mixologist, globe-trotting DJ, philosopher,
studio geek, former political radical and comic-book character. He has
released on Dirt Crew, Mule, Superfreq, Poker Flat, Audiomatique and his own
label, Ransom Note. He has also headed into the studio with now LA-based Mr
C, to partner and co-create the Sycophant Slags. It’s an alias highly suited
to Adultnapper, who has always steered clear of following a ‘trendy’ path,
for one more idiosyncratic, but no doubt closer to his heart. Good thing he
did. Born and raised in LA, but now living in Brooklyn, Big Bully (Dawson
Baca) is a producer, musician, DJ and vocalist who blends streetwise flavor
and techno sophistication in his musical output. His vocal prowess has seen
him record with Dinky, Jay Haze/Fuck Pony, [a]ppendics.shuffle (Ken Gibson),
Samim and others, with work appearing on Get Physical, Esperanza, Circus
Company to name but a few. Though both Big Bully and Adultnapper have often
been associated with moodier and darker sounds in their careers, it’s very
clear that both artists have more than one side to their musical
personalities. On this release Adultnapper gets deeper and funkier than you
may have heard him before, while maintaining his immaculate production
values and commitment to the dancefloor. The two tracks offer contrasting
elements. The title track is Adultnapper channeling the vibe of LA
sunset-lit early evenings, where burnished lazy days meet the rising energy
of Hollywood’s sultry nightlife. Strutting self-assured percussion, layers
of deep and moody chords, underpinned by a swinging bassline and the
shimmering breathy vocals of Big Bully. This is Adultnapper stretching his
rich sonic palette with sounds inspired by LA ‘s natural environment and
almost mystical presence.
