The influence of cold wave and post-punk has gradually become more pronounced across Correspondant's recent releases, with this latest offering – Correspondant 35 – possibly the clearest example of the trend yet. Something is Wrong comes from Vox Low, the Parisian duo of Benoit Raymond and Jean Christophe Couderc, who take their cues from krautrock, vintage psychedelia, minimal synth music, and new wave. While far from a conventional electronic/club music record, the EP's two original cuts align with the profile of the label (described by founder Jennifer Cardini as cinematic, downtempo warmups), and see remixes from returning Correspondant artist Javi Redondo and Optimo Trax affiliates Boot & Tax. Dread-laden title track "Something is Wrong" features B-grade horror movie organs, a low-slung bassline, and droning guitar chords. Claudio Brioschi and Cristian Croce of Boot & Tax supply the first remix, while Javi Redondo's rework seems to take influence from British post-punk revivalists. The second original cut, "It's 1940 in this Room," has a distinct American film from the late '70s vibe, with a Nick Cave-esq drawl layered over spiky blues guitar and loose garage percussion. "In the other room it's 1940," the vocalist intones, narrating a trip through retro Hollywood nightlife "and it takes us there."
