After setting imaginations racing when they chronicled the glamourous yet hollow world of New York’s beautiful and damned in their recent concept album ‘Plastic Dolls’, Voices of Black are back with an EP on Double Standard that explores a more romantic vein albeit with the same inventiveness and electronic mischief. A natural step across to Gadi Mizrahi’s vinyl only imprint Double Standard has resulted in an EP that has allowed the cosmic duo to explore their more languorous musical selves. Not a far cry from label buddies Soul Clap’s compelling mix of house, RnB and Soul, ‘Have U 2 Myself’ is smooth yet intoxicating, sun-soaked disco house. Worst Friends and Tanner Ross serve up the heat in their stylish remixes. e house sound is fully embraced in ‘Take Back Soho’ - a dreamy melodic soundscape that sizzles with the sultry air of summer in the city. You can almost swim in the luscious warm pads as the underwater vocals oat drift over the bassline grooves. Tanner Ross is the New Jersey born producer who has released on labels such as Dirty Bird, Freerange, Airdrop and Culprit. e inevitable slide into DJing is what led him to meet now regular collaborators Soul Clap. Tanner’s sublime take on ‘Take Back Soho’ glides at a more lingering pace, the spaced out vocal and synths further distorted resulting in a real slo-disco burner. ‘Have U 2 Myself’ sounds like the lament of a jealous lover gone clubbing to let the nightime wash away the yearning. Infectiously groovy with a soulful swing and sharply cut samples, ‘Have You To Myself’ is both melancholic and buzzing with the synth psychedelia of a trippy night out. NYC based John Paul Jones (Tom Croose) & Ryan Cavanagh (Slow Hands) aka Worst Friends rst met at school in Philadelphia and joined musical forces upon arriving in New York where together they collectively honed their kaleidoscopic sound. Here they deliver a fractured glitterball remix that unfolds with disco tinged beats and a 80s synth magic.
