Strongly influenced by Cuban music, the afro-cuban repertoire stands at the bottom of modern Senegalese music. Located between Mauritania, Mali, Guinée-Bissau and Guinée-Conakry, Sénégal is known for the « négritude » concept as theorized by its former and first President, the late Léopold Sédar Senghor. This concept aims at restoring some sense of pride around the idea of a black civilization and culture, an idea expressed by some individuals as diverse as Marcus Garvey or James Brown, throughout the 20th century.
