"Secretsundaze are among the last of a dying breed: DJs that prove themselves via the records they spin, instead of the records they make." Resident Advisor
“The 'underground becoming the overground': it can all be traced back to the runaway success of Giles Smith and James Priestley's baby." Mixmag
“Secretsundaze changed the face of daytime clubbing" Time Out
While DJs like myself add a little something, the real sound of Secretsundaze comes from Giles and James - deep, sexy abstract disco house music played with warmth and personality". Craig Richards (Fabric)
Secretsundaze are proud to announce their first label compilation DANCE 2017, a Double CD, one unmixed and one mixed. Dance 2017 will also extend into a run of V/A EPs throughout next year, hot on the heels of the first 12" in the same name, featuring Fred P, Nubian Mindz & Aybee out just a few weeks ago, as well as a new party series.
Having previously released three critically acclaimed Secretsundaze mix comps, DANCE 2017 is the first label compilation, representing an exciting new chapter for the label. The artwork and name 'DANCE 2017' is a reference to the feel of pioneering late 80s and early 90s house and techno compilations. The comp is delivered in a non-mixed format as well as a mixed format, with the duo mixing it live at The Pickle Factory, where the pair hold their monthly Secretsundaze - All Night Long residency, playing 8 hour sets each month.
This is the first time the label's catalogue has been brought together in this way and it features some of the finest moments and biggest sellers the label has seen, including the massive 'SS1' from DJ QU, Shanti Celeste's 'Nu4him', Brawther's stunning debut release for the label 'Spaceman Funk' which has been re-pressed countless times. Wbeeza's 'Ferguson' and Endian's deadly 'Finish Me' also make the cut. The compilation is a great snapshot of the secretsundaze sound for seasoned fans and a new audience alike.
“DANCE 2017 fundamentally represents the dance music that we're into and play right now. For the compilation Giles and I hand picked some of our favourite tracks from the label's catalogue. We like to think that all of the music we have released past and present has a timeless quality and that is very much something we strive for" says James. Giles adds "Dance 2017 references the names of dance comps of the late 80s & 90s. I first heard early house on a NOW compilation in 1988 at the age of 15. I vividly remember being sat in my friend's mum's car parked in the school playground and stuff like MARRS, Bomb The Bass and Krush were booming out of the stereo. That was it, we were hooked!"
DANCE 2017 launches with an intimate, cosy friends and extended family session at MOTH Club In Hackney on NYD with Secretsundaze playing all night long. Plus Dance 2017 sessions will extend across the year, varying from small 250 cap parties up to 2000 cap showcases at the likes of Sonar and some of Secretsundaze's larger dates in London.
The Secretsundaze story itself is one of the definitive London clubbing stories of the past two decades. The DJ duo have regularly played at many of world's finest clubs from Robert Johnson (Offenbach) Panorama Bar (Berlin), Air (Tokyo), Output (NYC), Smart Bar (Chicago) and the terrace at Space (Ibiza).
With this release in Januaury plus fresh EPs on the way from both Fred P & Endian in the first 3 months of the year, 2017 is already shaping up to be the biggest year for the label since it's inaugural release back in 2007.
