II 14. Greyhound: Move On Up Clubnights and associated compilations are as rare as caf�s at the seaside. So what�s so special about this one? The answer is preppy easy: this compilation isn�t about dropping extremely rare (but outermost questionable) tracks or rattling off recurrent clich�s! Instead, here comes a selection of highly influential sounds from the last thirty-some years of dance music. Among the gems on this album there are high-class tracks such as Althea & Donna�s classic �Uptown Top Rankin", Children Of The Mission�s �Tears� (produced by Giorgio Moroder) which was used by DJ Shadow for his �Organ Donor". And last but not least, Daniel Sofer with �Scratchin 100 Speakers� featuring the young Dr. Dre. Florian Keller has been spinning since 1988 and is among the Top 7 of all Rare Groove DJs, standing in line with Keb Darge (BBE), DJ Shadow, Egon and PeanutButterWolf of Stone Throw as well as DJ Muro from Japan. Not only due to the broad experience in this genres he�s gathered over his spinning years but also since he�s collecting records since the mid-80s, swaps rare singles and moreover is mixing funkblasting gems! He sharpened his skills during the years of legendary Munich regular clubnight and radio show `Into Somethin` which had him travelling around the globe. Alas this compilation isn�t the first nor last to come - towards the end of 2002 he�s released the �Creative Musicians� compilation on Perfect Toy. And he�s been mixing the Compost CD for the Street Art book to �The Art Of Rebellion� (CPT 156)!!! On �Party-Keller - Vol. 1″ Florian effortlessly manages to combine some of the grand styles in music history: A mixture of Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Reggae and Rare Groove. And just like the concept of the Party-Keller regular Munich-based clubnight hosted by Florian, the tunes on this compilation are not chosen because of their rareness (although most of them are�) but just because of what they do to an open-minded person�s heart and legs. Florian Keller always had his focus on the creative Funk period - but never ignored all those influences that matter for quality music. All the roots for all kinds of Club music doubtlessly generated in the late 60s to the early 80s. The drumpatterns, the basslines, the development and growing use of electronic instruments, that is what we still dance to and surely always will. No House (and Techno) without the Boogie and Electro, no Hip Hop or Drum & Bass without the Funk and the Reggae, obviously no 80s Electroclash without 80s Electro, and no intelligent music at all without the improvisational vein of Jazz. That simple it is. Originality is what counts for solid sound, and there�s no doubt things are always fuelled with more spirit when they appear for the first time. v Florian Keller on the tracks: Uptown Top Rankin is simply a classic. The intro shot to fame with the Stereo MC�s in the early 90�s. Rappin & Rhymin is the first female rap recording (1979) - allegedly. I don�t care, it�s definitely a grand funk instrumental and a stunning rap. I taped Don�t Hold Back off of the radio in 1979 and kept loving this boogie-tune ever since. Go and get yourself an original 12″ copy at your 2nd hand dealer for $4.00 if you like. The version of Simalak Child that Theo Thoennessen used to drop back in the days is for me one of the best Hip-Hop remixes of the New School era. Un Homme Est Mort is a track I�ve always been waiting for someone to discover and compile (or sample it) within the last 10 years, fortunately this didn�t happen until now. Tears is certainly the sample DJ Shadow used for his �Organ Donor� and indeed a wicked tune from the later Donna Summer Producer Giorgio Moroder. The Zydeco-Band Sam Brothers Five obviously had huge fun back in 1979 covering the then latest Chic smashhit �Le Freak� doing S.A.M. Thanks to DJ Katmando for introducing me this unique Swamp-Disco-Funk inferno. The great thing about the 80�s was the joy of experimenting around. With Three People (Nude Below The Waist) you have a track from a Detroit based New-Wave Band with the scratch-skills of the Knights Of The Turntables. Scratchin 100 Speakers is somehow exemplary of hundreds of other scratch-tunes of that time, only this one�s from the West Coast and the scratch-artist is the young Dr. Dre. Born Under A Bad Sign still makes me wonder how one single woman can be so damn funky with her guitar? With Beware Of The Stranger we have a super-nice yet quite unknown cover-version of Voices Of East Harlem�s tune �Wanted, Dead Or Alive". Is this Prince? No, way earlier (1974), a very fine Garage-Funk Band called Darondo recorded Legs. Crazy Girl has -for my ears- the most sluggish break in music history. Wonderful track, Funk winner. It�s nearly impossible to cover such a great tune like Curtis Mayfield�s Move On Up in an adequate way.
