After the success of previous Various Artist EPs, cultured underground outlet Cinematic Recordings is back with another tasteful EP that features tracks by label head Soy Mustafa, City 2 City, Aubrey and John Tejada & Justin Maxwell.
Traversing genres boundaries in style, this EP pulls together a mix of established tech house talent, new school techno greats and fast rising young guns making a big mark.
Up first is label boss Soy, who has nurtured his Cinematic label into an ever reliable outlet for quality techno sounds. His sublimely slow burning 'Spectral' is an exercise in deep techno restraint. Rather than relying on any pre-sets the track feels built from the ground up, and as a result oozes a very real soul.
John Tejada, the San Fran tech house king pin and Kompakt regular, then teams up with long time sonic sparring partner Justin Maxwell for another of their special collaborations.
The stunning result is an uplifting, spiritual bit of energetic tech with crisp drums and perc and oodles of feeling in the pads that just keeps on flowing for the duration.
Kicking off the B side long time techno devotee Aubrey contributes 'Bubble Funk'. Like the music with which he has made his name since the early nineties, this is a carefully crafted and hugely accomplished track that is riddled with pleasingly synthetic pads, hooky arpeggiated synths and lots of fine sonic details that really elevate it way above your standard club track.
It's a deeply emotive, richly airy track that will make for some truly memorable moments on the dancefloor.
Finally, It's then French producer City 2 City, who has appeared on this label before as well as on Chez Damier's Balance. His sublimely crafted 'Floating' exactly feels like that thanks to the hovering beauty of his pads, the gentle chatter of his distant percussion and the rubbery kineticism imbued within his drums.
With this EP, Cinematic has called upon a diverse array of talents and each to their own has come up with a compelling track that really means something.
