Is there any other band around right now quite like The Sound of Arrows? Any other band injecting such a fantastical, almost childlike sense of wonder into skyscraping choruses and chest swelling melodies? Or, for that matter, making jaw dropping mini movies (entirely on their own) to accompany their music, which play out like dreamscapes coming into vivid life? It is highly doubtful. Just as there is no doubt that ever since the Swedish duo of Stefan Storm and Oskar Gullstrand first came onto the music scene, the world has been a much more colourful place for it. A clutch of initial tracks released independently in their native country led to a burst of excitement which saw the band releasing their beautiful “Into the Clouds” single on Neon Gold, followed by them signing to Geffen, with a debut full length slated for release in the autumn. Now, one of those initial tracks, the euphoric “Magic”, has been rerecorded and is being released just in time for the summer – a gorgeous, heart bursting mini-anthem sounding not unlike a children’s choir ramraiding Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, with bagfuls of orchestral samples strapped to their backs. It is at once joyous and infectious, albeit with an undertow of sadness, as Storm sings about the moments in life that are utterly perfect but, ultimately, cannot last. To accompany the song, The Sound of Arrows have also produced what is possibly their most ambitious and eye popping visual work to date – a short film with child actors, monsters, wondrous landscapes and much, much more.
