Not content to be defined by the "dark" turn the consume label has taken of late, label boss, Gunjack enlists the help of techno/electronica don, Mark Broom, of Warp, R&S, BPitch fame. While "Dubstep" artists are fiending over tunes that sample Detroit classics and have that "techno" vibe, third wave techno-heads The Grey Man aka Mark Broom and Gunjack seem determined to show them all how it should be done! "Aquatic Life" is a two tracker on grey, ten inch vinyl. In the A1 slot, "Slimy Tench" by Mark Broom, is a gritty, freaky journey into techno soul, that conjures images of Basic Channel having tea with AFX twin in the belly of a sea monster circa 1996! Smoked out techno dub pads hover over squelchy, echo-plexed drums. Freaky subs clash with ugly drones and bass warps, making "Slimy Tench" into more than just "techno - dub", this is the true sound of diversity, brought to us by one of the most pivotal figures in the industry!
On the flip side, in the b1 slot, Gunjack get his head nod on with "Aguas Negras", a tune that, while retaining the break-ish elements typical of recent Gunjack productions, makes use of subs and deep, b12-esqe melodies to create a whole new breed of rich, emotional funk. It's no wonder why Consume is rapidly becoming a "musician's label", with famous fans like The Flying Lotus, Scorn, The Detroit Grand Pubahs, Rob hall of Gescom/Skam, Darren Emmerson of Underworld and techno demi-god, Ben Sims, etc. ESSENTIAL.
