With the "Fresh Water EP", Life and Death once again bring together a combination of unique musical voices that stretch beyond traditional genres to stake out new territories in contemporary dance music. Coming out of the gate like a horse on fire, the title track sees Italian duo, Tale Of Us, return to the Life and Death mothership with a new original piece featuring Berlin duo, The/Das. It's a haunting dancefloor monster that won't leave your mind (or body) quickly, even once the music stops. With its throbbing bassline, ethereal synths and that voice that beckons, cooly but urgently, Fresh Water hits its emotional nerve with razor-like precision. Next up comes the appropriately named Life and Death, a paean to the ethos of the label and a missive to the collective unconsciousness of the world at large. Label veterans Tale Of Us and Clockwork combine their considerable talents here with newcomers The/Das to shoot this very personal statement across the bow of contemporary music. It's not between us and them but life and death, calls out the expressive voice of The/Das' Fabian Fenk, as an epic soundtrack builds and rolls slowly but steadily underneath it. A marching song for a disaffected but impassioned generation, Life and Death is as nuanced and unique as the artists and label behind it. A rallying call for something better lying in wait on the other side of all of our futures. Last up is the perfect coda for this well rounded emotional journey. The/Das's Keep This gets reworked by Tale Of Us and takes us to a hopeful and happy place that's the perfect finishing point for this story. As Fabian croons to us quickly across the groove Tale Of Us impart their own unique sound throughout it. A sound which is actually not a sound so much as a feeling that the sound evokes. Hard to describe but obvious to feel once it penetrates your ears, it's an emotional connection they make once again, almost effortlessly, as they reinterpret The/Das' beautiful original.
