The legendary jazz composer Sun Ra was in a lot of transition during the 1960′s, relocating from Chicago to New York State for further expansions into the realm of free jazz and other exploratory forays of modern music. By 1966, Sun Ra was a full enigma to the world and his tapestry of space age and ancient Egyptian ethos aligned in full during this phase. The Magic City, Heliocentric Worlds and many other LP’s of this era are not only pivotal statements in Ra’s canon but are some of the most legendary free jazz albums ever released. It’s always beautiful to hear brand new music from Sun Ra and we have been blessed with this occurrence by the staff at Art Yard Records and a new release that hit our office today.
Space Aura is of course the new release and was a product of a shifting state of consciousness Ra was going through during the mid ’60′. Art Yard Records had lifted this unknown live recording out of the deepest pockets of the Ra archives for a much needed first pressing on both vinyl and digital formats. Ra recorded the release in a professional environment at the University of Buffalo in 1966, accompanied by his closest members of the Arkestra and billed under the moniker Sun Ra and his Band from Outer Space. With a multi-track recording of this year, the window into Ra’s creative process expands in a way that is truly priceless. These recordings are unheard in any realm and have some of the most pristine sounds for any live recording sourced in ’66 by Ra. Ethereal musings from one of the most eccentric bands to ever put out records and a new release that tops most new Ra items.
Sound Colour Vibration is proud to present the first two public streams of this release courtesy of Art Yard Records with the first two tracks of the new release. We are very happy to see Space Aura hit the world soon and to also introduce you to the first look.
