Producer Magnus PI's worldly percussive / electronic wanderings lead the Penya Investigations to far off horizons with sounds from Cuba, India , Turkey , North Africa and beyond. The EPs opener “Why So Angry” was written by Magnus after an aggressive encounter with an old acquaintance. The glitchy. lo-fi Tabla-driven opening gives way to a Dhol inspired percussion onslaught with a rain of electronics from Indian wizard "Daisho" , Penya’s Afro-Latin roots are unearthed in the EP’s title track “Beat Your Demon” The songs raw atmosphere is characterised by a melodic and rhythmic reference to “Oya,” an unbeatable warrior goddess in the Afro-Cuban Yoruba based religion Santeria.Co-written by Magnus PI and Penya’s Finnish singer / multi-instrumentalist Lilli Elina, Penya's Percussion don Jim Le M is an initiated ceremonial Bata drummer. These ancient beats can be heard throughout this track, underpinned by the bands Venezuelan bass / synth man Adolfredo Pulido . ‘Beat your Demon’ features Penya's newest member Viva Msimang on Trombone whose soaring improvisation transforms the tracks ritual gloom to its optimistic conclusion. Chambomb was a word made up by the band when discussing a combination of the Colombian "Champeta" beat with the Puerto Rican "Bomba" . However, the resulting tribal/electronic exploration owes little to this idea, and more to an ambient Mbira trickle, a Morrocan street beat, and a distinct echo of Afro-Cuban bata ritual. Karachi makes a passing reference the bands debut single " Acelere" before Lilli Elina transforms the electro-carnival atmosphere into an ethereal vocal peak. The pounding Colombian Tambora drum clatters beneath a final Magnus PI percussion onslaught, leading the EP to a pulsating conclusion.
