We at misericord are very excited to welcome a new artist to the fold, Julian “October” Smith. Jules runs Bristol’s Caravan label and has been responsible for some of the most startling and original new dance music to emerge from the uk in the last three years. Superbly creative, unfettered by any notion of genre (singer and guitarist with bristol noise heroes “the first and last men” to boot), his sound worlds are as much informed by dub, noise rock & guitar-pedals as they are by Disco, House or Dubstep and are richer and more exciting as a result. Hermetic laptop Techno this ain’t ! With his debut ep for Misericord he has gifted us a swampy analogue house ep, with a nod to the chaotic sampladelia of the 90s but eyes set firmly on the future. From the unsettling exploitation-disco of ‘Bree Daniels’, the wonk-house of ‘Shilmirane’ and the slow-psychfunk-burn of ‘HD-189733-b’ it makes us as excited as when we first heard motorbass and la funk mob for the first time (and that’s saying something). But this is going to do damage on forward thinking floors like wolf + lamb or droog too. One early reaction from Ivan Smagghe says all we need to really: “wow…THIS IS THE BOMB… exactly, house but wonky. minimal but funky. and it grooves when 99% of this Mannheim bongo rubbish is as flat as Netherlands… this gives me faith.” Us too. we hope you like it. Misericord is an occasional label from Ewan Pearson, Sasse Lindblad and friends.!
