Space Cadets return for a fifth excursion to the furthest stratospheres of Drum and Bass with another stunning 12” from Russian producer and label stalwart Oak. Following the success of NASA004 from Australian producer Nether, Oak returns with two tracks that build upon earlier efforts, amalgamating still more influence into his already unique mode
to create music quite unlike anything currently available in the 170bpm structure.
Two previous releases from Oak on the London based imprint helped define the sound of a label which is solidifying a position at the vanguard of electronic music. Marrying a strong aesthetic, art direction is overseen by US artist/illustrator Theo Ellsworth, with consistently solid releases has seen Space Cadets rise deservedly above the clamour of a hectic yet fruitful period for electronic bass music. A side Escapist merges taut digital precision with emotive analog warmth, from the assuredly full bassline to the oddly chirpy and blissfully saccharine synth leads. Whirring and clicking background percussion works overtime to keep in step with a boomy halftime drum pattern, underpinned always by sunkissed chord work, the effortless deployment of which is one of Oak’s greatest talents.
Firebird enraptures from the off. A steady stream of progression works its way through a bass heavy structure that exudes more than an occasional passing semblance to the relentless exuberance of jazz, with heavily
digitised horns working to a dramatic end.
Released on heavyweight 180g vinyl and equally heavy digital formats. Available through all the usual retailers.
