Incredible album of oblique Batucada/Techno Hybrids - new on Hospital Productions, initial copies on transparent green Wax* Nicolò Fortuni and Nico Vascellari's flamboyant Ninos Du Brasil battery make their Hospital Productions debut with an infectious blend of bespoke Batucada rhythms, techno and punk in 'Novos Mistérios'. It's a perfectly inappropriate release for Dominick Fernow aka Prurient's label, bound to baffle the purists and incite the dance in equal measures. Pairing carnivalesque percussive rituals with the slinky contours of stripped techno and a deeply engrained punk sensibility, Nico and Nicolò cast a unique alignment of polymetric patterns and magickal atmosphere primed to appeal to your primal instincts on the dancefloor. Their mutual roots in the Italian Hardcore Punk scene feed forward into the album's direct approach and humid atmosphere; from the exotic exercise of opener 'Olhar Das Folhas' and the roiling 'Sombra Da Lua' to the eponymous epic finale, weaving a line between Villalobos-like Gamelan patterns in 'Legioes Des Cupins' through a thundering nod to Brazilian metal legends on 'Sepultura' - sans guitars - and some supremely kinky business in the hip-seducing rhythmelodic cadence of 'Miragem'. But if any one track sums them up, it's the fusion of roguish call-and-response, whooping bird calls and metallic drum tang in 'Essenghelo Tropical' which distills their essence to an almost pop-wise potency. Perhaps adding to the unlikeliness of the whole project, it's worth noting that Nico is also one of the world's pre-eminent visual artists, known for representing Italy at the Biennale di Venezia (2007) and collaboration with Marina Abramovic, beside running the unique Coda Lunga gallery/atelier/venue in Vittorio Veneto, Italy, and the amazing Von Archive label with film-maker Carlos Casas, who is also producing videos for each track on this album.
