Very little is known about Nine Circles, a celebrated - but thoroughly obscure - minimal wave band from the early 1980s. Made up of Dutch life partners Lidia Fiala and Peter Van Garderen, Nine Circles' material largely went ignored upon its initial, limited release. While some music has surfaced since, The Early Days is the first proper retrospective of their forgotten, unreleased and hard-to-find material. Pleasingly, it's a very strong collection; with Fiala's stylish, evocative vocals perfectly complimenting Van Garderen's droning synths, intergalactic melodies and sparse, cheap-sounding drum machine rhythms. Given the overall quality, picking highlights is tricky, though the strangely exotic "What There Left" sounds like a long-lost anthem for apocalyptic doomsayers.
