Fade To Mind is a both a record label and a movement, a series of club nights and co-operative projects in music, visual art, video and apparel. Led by Los Angeles-based producer Kingdom, Fade To Mind is an injection of the personal back into contemporary club music. Sparked by Kingdom's longstanding relationships with Dallas DJ/producer Prince William, LA acts Nguzunguzu and Total Freedom, as well London's Night Slugs collective (to which Fade To Mind will operate as a sister label), this label marks a dramatic genesis of collaboration between the UK and American undergrounds. Fade To Mind’s debut release is Nguzunguzu's ‘Timesup’ EP, a five-song burst of forward-thinking club tracks full of sub bass and crisp chimes and claps, with soulful and emotional foundations. As the label's inaugural entry, this EP is a mission statement for a new era of American club music. Nguzunguzu are a production duo whose roots trace back to Puerto Rico and India but currently rest their heads in Los Angeles, where they have been instrumental in building the anti-locale community that surrounds them. Held together by a bond consisting of club music, dark vibes, and out sounds from all corners of the globe, their chemistry is a unique blend of R&B, cumbia, kuduro, and house elements, often derived from improvisations on MPC drum machines and a room full of synthesizers. With little concern for genre or location, Nguzunguzu craft hymns for digital nomads. Haunting and propulsive, these dark tracks set out to create a nightclub space of their own. The half-time stomp of ‘Water Bass Power’ sputters and transforms in wild variations, and ‘Wake Sleep’ is sexy and grimey all at once, while the cinematic chimes and driving kick drums of ‘Timesup’ itself recreate the melancholic longing associated with the last song of the night. Kingdom’s remix of ‘Timesup’ delivers his signature marriage of commanding divas over acid-tinged club stompers, retaining the elemental mystique of the original while adding a reinvented vocal element. ‘Wake Sleep’ (Total Freedom Remix) drops you alone, at night, into the Alaskan wilderness, where hypothermia-inducing river water transforms into white noise and 808s to generate a throughly haunting bass track. During his 10-year stint in Brooklyn, Kingdom emerged as a statesman in the contemporary bass scene, gaining worldwide recognition for his unique and deeply emotional productions and DJ sets. With hybrid taste and an ear for improvisation, Kingdom's major releases on Fool's Gold (‘Mind Reader’) and Night Slugs (‘That Mystic’) position him to launch this platform of his own, alongside Texas producer Prince William. A longtime staple of Texas dance music culture, Prince William blends rap and street sensibilities with an eye toward global developments in music, helping to shape the sound of many local Dallas rappers, as well as the Fade To Mind roster, which includes Nguzunguzu, MikeQ, Total Freedom, Gremino, Kingdom, Cedaa, Clicks & Whistles, Rizzla, Fatima Al Qadiri, and others yet to be revealed.
